Choosing a solar well pump kit: a buyer's checklist

A solar well pump listing tells you two numbers that never happen together and a voltage. This checklist covers what decides whether the pump works in your well, and what you will have to buy alongside it.

Short answerBuy on the pump curve at your total dynamic head, not on maximum flow or head. Then check the voltage window against your panel string, what the box leaves out (most pumps ship without panels, controller, pipe or rope), the cable length against your well depth, dry-run protection and whether wear parts are sold.

Key takeaways

  • Buy on the curve at your head, not the listing's maxima.
  • Most pumps ship alone: budget for panels, controller, pipe, rope, check valve and splice kit.
  • Check cable length and submersion rating against your well.

Before you buy

  1. Duty point. Know your daily gallons, design sun hours and total dynamic head. The calculator gives all three and a flow rate.
  2. Curve, not maximums. Ask for the pump curve and check it delivers your flow at your head in the middle of its range. See reading a pump curve.
  3. Voltage window. Compare the pump's input range with your panel string's operating and cold open-circuit voltage.
  4. Box contents. All three VEVOR pumps we list ship as the pump only. Budget for panels, a controller if needed, drop pipe, safety rope, check valve, splice kit and cable.
  5. Cable length. The 24V and 48V VEVOR pumps list 33 ft of cable. A deeper setting needs a waterproof splice and more cable of the right gauge: see wire size.
  6. Submersion rating. The pump must sit below the pumping level but within its maximum submersion: 98.4 ft for the VEVOR 12V model, 65.6 ft for the 24V and 48V.
  7. Dry-run and full-tank control. Look for a controller with a low-water probe and a float switch input.
  8. Wear parts and support. Ask whether stators, diaphragms or impellers are sold separately and who answers warranty claims.
  9. Origin, if you want a grant. Under the October 2026 REAP rule, PV systems with components from listed foreign-adversary countries, including China, are ineligible. See USDA grants.

Questions

What should a solar well pump kit include?
At minimum a pump, a matched controller, and enough cable for your setting depth. Many listings sell the pump alone, so check for panels, mounting, drop pipe, safety rope, a check valve, a splice kit and a float switch before comparing prices.
Next step

Three DC well pumps side by side on the merchant's own figures, plus panels, controllers and batteries.
